Map of Stillwater River

The Stillwater River originates in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness near Yellowstone National Park and flows northeast to join the Yellowstone River at Columbus. Despite its name, this swift, rocky river tumbles through spectacular mountain scenery before entering a 45-mile stretch of canyons and prairie. The Stillwater supports healthy populations of rainbow, brown, cutthroat, and brook trout, with rainbows making up about 60-70% of the catch in the lower sections. Fish average 12-16 inches with browns occasionally exceeding 20 inches. The river sees far less fishing pressure than waters closer to Bozeman or Livingston, making it a favorite among locals seeking quality dry fly fishing without crowds. Summer brings excellent action on attractor patterns and hoppers, while fall sees brown trout migrating from the Yellowstone for spawning. Access is good throughout, with multiple FWP fishing access sites between Nye and Columbus.
