Map of Missouri River

The Missouri River is one of the most prolific wild trout fisheries in North America, with the 35-mile tailwater section below Holter Dam near Craig holding an estimated 3,500 to 7,000 trout per mile. Formed at Three Forks by the confluence of the Madison, Jefferson, and Gallatin rivers, the Missouri flows north through Montana for over 700 miles. The prime fly fishing water between Holter Dam and Cascade features consistent year-round fishing thanks to dam-regulated flows, with rainbows averaging 14-18 inches and browns running slightly larger. The river is renowned for technical dry fly fishing during prolific hatches of blue-winged olives, pale morning duns, tricos, and caddis. While fishing pressure can be heavy, the Missouri rewards anglers with excellent catch rates and the chance at trophy trout in a stunning Big Sky landscape.
