Map of Big Spring Creek

Big Spring Creek is central Montana's most important trout stream, originating from one of the world's largest freshwater springs near Lewistown where 50,000-64,000 gallons of crystal-clear, 52-degree water emerge per minute. This spring creek flows 30 miles through the scenic country between the Big Snowy and Judith Mountains before joining the Judith River. Unlike many Montana spring creeks on private ranches, Big Spring Creek offers excellent public access with seven FWP fishing access sites along its length. The constant water temperature and high mineral content support abundant insect life and healthy populations of wild brown and rainbow trout, with fish averaging 12-18 inches and trophies available for patient anglers. This wade-friendly stream provides year-round fishing opportunities, with hopper season from July through September being particularly popular. Lewistown is one of the few Montana towns where anglers can catch trout within city limits.
