Map of Jefferson River

The Jefferson River is formed near Twin Bridges by the confluence of the Big Hole, Beaverhead, and Ruby rivers, making it the largest of the three forks that create the Missouri River at Three Forks. This 77-mile river flows through some of Montana's most picturesque and isolated country, offering solitude that's increasingly rare on more famous waters. The Jefferson is predominantly a brown trout fishery, with fish averaging 12-14 inches and genuine trophies lurking in the deeper holes and undercut banks. While irrigation pressures can challenge summer flows, spring and fall bring excellent conditions for streamer and dry fly fishing. The canyon section between Cardwell and Three Forks provides stunning scenery through limestone walls and classic holding water. Best fished from a drift boat, the Jefferson rewards patient anglers willing to work for quality fish with techniques like swinging streamers and drifting hoppers along the banks.
