Map of Little Blackfoot River

The Little Blackfoot River flows through the mountains west of Helena to join the Clark Fork River near Garrison. This scenic freestone stream offers good fishing for rainbow and brown trout in a less-crowded setting than more famous western Montana waters. The river parallels Highway 12 through the Deer Lodge National Forest, providing easy access to quality pocket water and deep pools. Browns dominate the lower river with fish averaging 12-15 inches, while rainbows are more common in the upper reaches. The Little Blackfoot fishes best from late June through October after spring runoff clears. Standard western hatches of caddis, mayflies, and stoneflies keep trout active, with hopper fishing being particularly effective in late summer. The proximity to both Helena and Missoula makes this an accessible day trip option. Several campgrounds and pullouts along the highway provide access for wade fishing. The river offers a classic small-stream Montana experience with willing trout and beautiful mountain scenery.
