Map of Ruby River

The Ruby River is a small-water gem flowing over 100 miles from the Snowcrest and Gravelly ranges through the Ruby Valley to its confluence with the Beaverhead near Twin Bridges. The tailwater section below Ruby Reservoir near Alder offers the most consistent fishing, with dam-regulated flows supporting abundant hatches of midges, caddis, PMDs, and yellow sallies. Brown trout dominate the fishery, averaging 14-18 inches with occasional fish pushing 20 inches. This narrow, meandering stream is ideal for wade fishing, though access is challenging as much of the river flows through private property with limited public access points. The technical nature of the fishing and difficult access result in lighter pressure than nearby famous rivers. Late summer terrestrial fishing with hoppers can be exceptional, while fall brings aggressive pre-spawn browns. The Ruby opens May third Saturday above the reservoir, with year-round fishing available below Alder.
