Map of Clark Fork River

The Clark Fork River is the largest river by volume in Montana, flowing 310 miles from its headwaters near Anaconda through the heart of Missoula and on to Idaho. After decades of environmental recovery from historic mining impacts, the Clark Fork has rebounded into a quality trout fishery with rainbow, brown, and westslope cutthroat trout. The lower river below Missoula offers exceptional match-the-hatch dry fly fishing, with large pods of hard-fighting rainbows averaging 16-17 inches rising to prolific mayfly and caddis hatches from June through October. Spring brings the Skwala stonefly hatch in April, followed by Mother's Day caddis in May. The river gathers the waters of Rock Creek, the Blackfoot, and Bitterroot rivers, each adding to its character. Float fishing is the primary method on the lower river, where slow glides and foam-filled back eddies hold quality fish.
