Tiber Reservoir, also known as Lake Elwell, is a 14,000-acre Missouri River impoundment on the Hi-Line near Chester. The reservoir offers excellent walleye fishing, with spring being prime time for trolling crankbaits along rocky points and submerged structure. Northern pike grow large in the fertile water, with fish over 15 pounds possible. Yellow perch are abundant and provide consistent action. Smallmouth bass have been established and offer exciting fishing along rocky shorelines. Channel catfish add to the warmwater diversity. The wide-open prairie setting creates challenging winds but concentrates fish predictably. Tiber Dam Marina provides boat launch and camping facilities. The reservoir fills from the Marias River and is managed for irrigation. Ice fishing is good for walleye and perch when safe ice forms. This is classic eastern Montana warmwater fishing with trophy potential, located in the remote country between Shelby and Havre.
