Map of Teton River

The Teton River originates along the Rocky Mountain Front west of Choteau and flows east through the prairie to join the Marias River. The upper river below the mountains offers good fishing for rainbow and brown trout in scenic foothill country, while the lower sections support warmwater species as the river crosses the agricultural prairie. The Teton is known for its spring creek character in certain reaches, with clear water and wary trout that demand careful presentations. Access is challenging through private land, though several FWP sites provide public entry. Summer irrigation can significantly reduce flows in the lower river, making spring and early summer the most reliable season for trout fishing. The Teton River area along the Rocky Mountain Front is renowned for wildlife including grizzly bears, elk, and prairie raptors. The nearby town of Choteau serves as a gateway to the Bob Marshall Wilderness and offers basic services for visiting anglers.
