Map of Fort Peck Lake

Fort Peck Lake is Montana's largest reservoir, stretching 134 miles along the Missouri River in northeastern Montana with over 1,500 miles of shoreline. Created by Fort Peck Dam during the 1930s, this massive impoundment offers exceptional fishing for walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, lake trout, chinook salmon, and various panfish. The walleye fishery is world-class, producing fish over 10 pounds with excellent catch rates for knowledgeable anglers. Trophy northern pike exceeding 20 pounds are caught annually, while lake trout can reach 30 pounds in the deeper waters. Multiple recreation areas around the lake provide camping, boat ramps, and services for visiting anglers. The annual Governor's Cup Walleye Tournament draws competitors from across the region. Spring and fall offer the best walleye fishing, while summer provides opportunities for all species. The surrounding Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge offers incredible wildlife viewing alongside world-class fishing.
